Measure Description

This measure is the total number of annual volunteer service hours logged by individuals volunteering with the City of West Palm Beach. Volunteer service hours are collected throughout the year by volunteer coordinators at the Police Department, Mandel Library and Grassy Waters Preserve. The Office of Volunteer Services collects volunteer service hours for all other areas. Each coordinator records and tallies the service hours in their department and submits totals to the Office of Volunteer Services. Volunteer Services compiles those figures to submit City-wide statistics on a monthly basis. The Citywide goal annually is 30,200 volunteer service hours.

Measure Importance

Measuring volunteer service hours provides a snapshot of how well we engage community resources to help meet the City’s mission and goals. Volunteers help fill the gap between the needs and resources available to the City. Measuring volunteer service hours demonstrates the City’s ability to coordinate efforts with civic, neighborhood, faith-based, business and educational organizations that are vital to the well-being of its residents. While volunteer work is important for the residents and communities served, it also benefits volunteers personally by providing education, career skills and leadership abilities. Volunteering offers a psychological benefit to the individual by creating sense of pride, belonging and accomplishment. Measuring volunteer service hours demonstrates the extent that residents are involved in community initiatives and taking part in projects that build a sense of community, and strengthen the City.

Explanation of Performance

In FY18, nearly 30,000 volunteer hours were contributed to the City of West Palm Beach.  This represents $637,247 (26,398 service hours x $24.14).  While this fell short of our annual target of 30,200 hours,  the dip is attributed to the retirement of the Volunteer Services Recreation Manager this past year and the turnover in the full-time Events Coordinator for this division.  Through the recruitment to fill both vacancies, the Department will be back on track to meet our annual target for volunteer services.

Members of the public interested in volunteering can contact the Department of Parks and Recreation at (561) 804-4900 to get started.
