Measure Description

The City of West Palm Beach’s Water Treatment Plant routinely monitors our drinking water throughout the year through the collection of thousands of samples. While not all sampling is reflected here, this focuses on those contaminants or monitoring which could result in acute or short-term health impacts. The monitoring for this measure includes filtered water turbidity (cloudiness that impacts disinfection), disinfectant residuals (a required minimum level of disinfectant in the drinking water leaving the plant), treatment techniques (specifications to remove viruses and Giardia lamblia cysts), and bacteria.

Measure Importance

It is critical that the City ensure a safe drinking water supply to the residents and visitors of West Palm Beach. Water Treatment Plant monitoring activities focus on preventing exposure to bacteria or microbes that could cause acute health impacts. Exposure may pose a special health risk for infants, young children, some elderly, and people with severely compromised immune systems.

Explanation of Performance

The data continues to show a high rate of compliance with the regulatory requirements and City goals. Drinking water samples have to meet established state and federal standards and the finished water from the Water Treatment Plant meets all the required standards. Regulating agencies allow a small percentage out of all the daily samples collected to exceed standards. This data is submitted as a Monthly Operating Report to Department of Health.
